Ethnomedical Uses: A research
developed by the Federal University of Rio De Janeiro, in 2004,
concluded that the skin of passion fruit has a high level of pectin
- a soluble fiber that aids in the delivery of important nutrients,
but works to block the absorption of carbohydrates, glucose, and
un-healthy cholesterol - in fact that reduces the cholesterol
levels, especially the sugar levels in the blood. In Brazil, natural
flour made of skin of passion fruit has been used for many years
against diabetes and cholesterol. From 500 species of Passiflora in
general, 120 had origin in Brazil. Most of them is used for
medicinal and functional purposes, with proven effects for nervous,
endocrinal and immunological systems. Passion fruit is also rich in
iron, niacina (B3 Vitamin) and calcium. Passion fruit get its name
from its flowers, which the Spanish missionaries thought resembled
Christ´s Passion, the crown of thorns. |
